Our Mission
Carothers Coastal Gardens is dedicated to promoting the love of gardening and horticulture through our Community Garden and surrounding property. We aim to encourage community beautification and enrich lives through discovery, education, art, and the conservation of plants and the natural environment.
Our Story
Carothers Coastal Gardens 501(c)(3) was formed to govern the Community Garden project which was founded in 2020 out of a need for community connection during a time of uncertainty and divisiveness. Many people turned to gardening as a way to stay busy and find joy in their days without much to do.
The City of Seabrook generously supported the project and allowed us to repurpose the old public works property hidden away and long forgotten about by the citizens. The entire vision was brought to life by local volunteers in a true grassroots effort.
Since then, the project has expanded enabling us to offer educational programs for scout troops and the public, tree giveaways, and guided nature tours.
Future plans include a public orchard, and a public native botanical garden.
Benefits Of A Public Garden
Public garden tourism refers to the practice of visiting and exploring public gardens as a form of recreational and educational tourism. Public gardens are designated areas that are open to the public and are typically maintained and managed by governmental organizations, non-profit institutions, or local communities. These gardens are specifically designed and cultivated to showcase a wide variety of plants, flowers, trees, and other elements of natural beauty.
Horticulture & Botanical Education
Public gardens often feature labeled plant collections, thematic displays, and interpretive signage, providing educational experiences for visitors. They may offer guided tours, workshops, or classes on gardening, horticulture, and environmental conservation. These activities help promote awareness and understanding of the natural world.
Community Engagement
Public gardens often engage with the local community through events, festivals, and collaborative projects. They can serve as gathering spaces for community activities, cultural performances, and social interactions, fostering a sense of belonging and civic pride.
Recreational Experiences
Public gardens provide visitors with a peaceful and aesthetically pleasing environment. They offer opportunities for leisurely walks, picnics, photography, and other recreational activities. Many gardens also have amenities like benches, trails, and designated areas for relaxation
Conservation & Preservation
Public gardens frequently play a role in preserving rare and endangered plant species. They may participate in
conservation efforts, such as seed banks, plant propagation programs, or research initiatives focused on plant ecology and biodiversity.
Increase Produce Availability
Public gardens provide a source of fresh produce for communities, especially those in urban areas where access to fresh foods may be limited. Additionally, public gardens can serve as educational resources, teaching individuals about gardening and healthy eating habits.
Health & Wellness
Public gardens offer a respite from urban environments and provide a therapeutic setting for relaxation and stress reduction. Research suggests that spending time in nature can have positive effects on mental & physical well-being.
